The Central Gauteng Golf Union hosted the Champ of Champions tournament at the Firethorn Course at Randpark Golf Club on 11 February, with huge success.
After an 18-hole play-off, there were three golfers tied at three over par with Daniel Fraser (17) from Bryanston managing to win after the second sudden-death play-off hole. Fraser won with a birdie on the par five ahead of Jarred Botha in second and Marcus Taylor in third.
Hardus van der Merwe, the primary school golf coordinator for the Central Gauteng Golf Union, said during the year all the golf clubs hosted a Junior Club Championships. The winners are invited to compete against each other at the Champ of Champions tournament to establish the ultimate junior champion.
Fraser, who won the Junior Club Championships at the Bryanston Country Club last year, said he had always had his eye on this title. The young golfer said the day felt like a roller coaster ride.
“I started really well, setting myself nicely for the rest of the day,” he said.
“But then I started dropping shots in the middle. I eventually picked up again. It was very up and down throughout the day.”
Fraser’s friends and his dad’s support had really helped him through the championship, he added.
The union also invited junior golfers to compete and play for the Order of Merit.
U19 winner, Cole Stevens shot a five- under par 67, Brendon Porter came in second and Carl Mwale took third. In the U13 age group, Arnoux van der Merwe took the top spot with Jordyn Peyper second and Jayden Hoskins in third.
