Valentine’s Night Race is back

PRAEGVILLE – Local running club is ready to host its 30th annual Valentine's Night Race.

If you love running then you will be excited to hear the Randburg Harriers Valentine’s Night Race is back.

The 30th annual 10km run through the suburbs surrounding the Randburg Sports Complex will take place on 16 February, with a cap of 6 500 runners.

Anyone can take part in the Randburg Harriers Valentine’s Night Race.

The event starts at 7pm and will cost runners R100 for both online and shop entries. Entries on the day will cost R110.

Grandmasters pay R50, and great grandmasters and blind athletes can run for free.

A running licence is required and temporary licences are R20.

An amount of R5 from every entry will be donated to Ann Harding Cheshire Home, which assists people with disabilities, and Wandsworth School, a special needs school.

The Valentine’s Night Race is always a hit.

“The run is unique in that it is a night road run, which is rare in Joburg, and people dress up according to the Valentine’s Day theme,” said Harriers club captain, John Neale. “There will be a festive atmosphere on Friday night, entertainment, a marquee and food and beverage stalls.”

Neale explained that in previous runs, about 70 per cent of the runners were non-licensed runners.

“So they are not club or regular runners which shows just how fun and social the event is. We have found a formula that works at this run.”

Runners will be spurred on by a bagpipe player at one point during the run, and for one mile follow a row of candles on the route.

A post-race party will be held afterwards with lucky draw prizes as well as prizes for the best dressed.

Fifteen cash prizes are available for winners in different categories varying from R170 to R650.

The Randburg Harriers Valentine’s Night Race promises to be as successful as it has been in the past.
