Africa’s best youth sport climbers converge on Fontainebleau
FONTAINEBLEAU – Sport climbers aim for top honours during the Sport Climbing Africa Youth Cup at City Rock Johannesburg.
Never have walls been scaled faster and with such skill than at the Sport Climbing Africa Youth Cup with one of two spots up for grabs at the Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympics.
City Rock Johannesburg in Fontainebleau was abuzz on 8 December.
Climbers competed fiercely for continental bragging rights as well as for an opportunity of a lifetime to compete in Argentina next year.
However, while the tension on the walls could be felt, the atmosphere at the venue was elated as fans, friends and family cheered every climber on from below.
Climbers competed in speed, boulder and lead climbing for an overall rating to determine Africa’s best.
In the end, Ferndale’s own Angela Eckhart, who is also a staff member at City Rock Johannesburg, won the female category, and Cape Town’s David Naude won the male division.
The general manager of City Rock Johannesburg, Cally Bishop congratulated all the competitors and the winners for their great achievement.
“This was the first time we hosted the Africa Youth Cup due to the new Youth Olympic structures,” said Bishop. “It was definitely a success. The climbers all brought their A-game and put everything they had on the line to win.”
The sport climbing gym hosts national and local competitions every year and Bishop invited anyone interested to contact the club about coming to watch them.
