Footgolf fun day for journos

ROOSEVELT PARK — We were invited for a round of footgolf, and don't let it fool you, it's harder than it looks.

Footgolf is a new way to have fun on a golf course, and it has nothing to do with clubs, a putter or a little white ball.

It involves a football that you won’t be kicking into a net but rather into a hole in the ground. The game itself is simple – a combination of soccer and golf whereby players are required to kick a ball into a hole in as few shots (kicks) as possible.

Nicholas Zaal and Andile Dlodlo size up the course before taking their shots.

It is a sport that was, surprisingly, created in the 1920s, but only now has footgolf started to take root at golf clubs all over the world. Now it’s Roosevelt Park’s turn to take a shot. Footgolf arrived at the Creek 9 mashie course last year, and the sport combines the knowledge of golf and the skill of soccer.

Lauren Sprout, Randpark Golf Club representative said, “The shortest hole on the course is hole number six at just 83m.

“The longest, hole number five, can be stretched to 210m to the backmarker… The holes are quite challenging, and getting around a par level is no small feat.”

We thought we would try out a spot of footgolf after the Northcliff Melville Times and Randburg Sun were invited to a press event.

“I thought this would be easy but it was really challenging,” said Northcliff Melville Times journalist, Roxy de Villiers.

Nicholas Zaal celebrates getting his first par.

Sports editor, Nicholas Zaal added, “Even though we are all exhausted now, I’m glad we had fun.”

If you would like to try some regular golf, Sprout recommended beginners try the mashie course first.

“The Creek 9 course is the perfect place for beginners to come and give golf a try before heading out onto the major links.

“The fees are great for fun Saturdays and we welcome people of all ages to come and give footgolf a try. There is no pressure, and we are open to all visitors.”
