Rand Park High proud of their water polo teams

RAND PARK – The girls' water polo team at Rand Park High School show other teams just what they are made of.

The Rand Park High School girls’ water polo team is ranked 24th in the SA Schools Girls’ Top 40 rankings.

The team participated in the Old Mutual Girls’ Only League hosted by Roedean School and competed against all the top schools in Gauteng, most of which were private schools.

“In doing so, this challenges the girls to perform to the best of their ability and to work hard,” said Heather Robinson, public relations officer for the school. Rand Park is amongst the top co-ed/public schools that participate in water polo and they can be proud of their achievements.”

She added that the rankings were calculated based on multiple tournaments in which the girls’ teams competed in.

What contributed to Rand Park’s success was the immense amount of time the team put into training.

“Some training takes place before school starts in the morning and in some in the afternoons. The demands of water polo are both physical and psychological. Our girls aspire to reach first-team status and they work hard to achieve this.”

To add to Rand Park’s success, four of their water polo players, Jordan Eustice, Courteney Pienaar, Angela Graham and Shakira January, have been selected to compete at provincial water polo level this year in their respective age groups. “Selections for the new provincial teams will be announced within the next two weeks,” said Robinson.

There are about 100 water polo players at the school as it has become quite a popular extramural activity at the school.

Kelly Cathcart-James, coach of girls’ water polo said she was proud of the level of dedication and commitment demonstrated by the teams.

“We have a combination of junior and senior players who work together and are great ambassadors for the school,” she said.

“We really excited about the season ahead based on our success to date.”
