Gay rugby team makes local debut at Diggers Rugby Club

PRAEGVILLE – Jozi Cats play for pride at a successful Diggers 7s Tournament.

Local gay rugby team, the Exclusive Books Jozi Cats impressed all in attendance at their debut tournament at Diggers Rugby Club, their new home.

South Africa’s first gay and inclusive competitive rugby side only won one of their four games in the Diggers 7s Tournament on 16 September. Yet their fast running and passing and good plays at the breakdown proved they are a team not to be underestimated and earned respect from Randburg’s best.

The match between Jozi Cats (in pink) and Liberty Sables is a tough one. Here, Teveshan Kuni is tackled hard.

“I am so proud of how well the guys played,” said Jozi Cats communications manager, Anthony Seger.

“Coaches have commented that our skills have improved so much since we started.”

Diggers club manager, Andrew Collison said when Jozi Cats made Diggers their new home, there was ‘seamless integration’.

“Since Jozi Cats came to Diggers, they added value to us and we added value to them,” he said.

“There have not been any problems. The coming of Jozi Cats has been good for everyone here, and good for rugby in South Africa.”
