A bounty of medals for Alchemy Dojang at the South African Korean Martial Arts Championships

CRESTA – Local dojang performs well at the South African Korean Martial Arts Championships.

 

Alchemy Dojang proved to be the fittest and strongest at the recent South African Korean Martial Arts Championships in Potchefstroom.

The dojang from Cresta competed against leading martial artists from across the country and still took home a whopping 24 medals across all forms and in different age groups.

There were two notable performances from junior Protea, Jenna Little, and veteran Protea, Geoff Leathem, who took home five gold medals apiece in their age groups.

“These achievements are remarkable under any circumstances, particularly so at this prestigious national event across all the Korean styles,” said Master Gregory Hart, their tang soo do (fighting technique) coach.

The team competed over two days in forms, wooden weapons forms, bladed weapons forms, combat weapons sparring, point sparring and continuous sparring.

Medals:

  • Natalie Duligal (17), a third dan, won silver in forms and silver in wooden weapons
  • Nikilya Ralitsoele (19), a third dan, took silver in forms, gold in wooden weapons, silver for point sparring and silver in continuous sparring
  • Jenna Little (16) a second dan, won gold in forms, wooden weapons, bladed weapons, point sparring and gold in continuous sparring
  • Geoff Leathem (49), a first dan, scooped gold in forms, wooden weapons, bladed weapons, point sparring and gold in continuous sparring
  • Tamzin Coetzee (14), a first dan, took silver for forms and bronze for bladed weapons
  • Katso Liphoko (11), a cho dan bo, won bronze in wooden weapons;
  • Philippa Leathem (12), a cho dan bo, secured bronze in forms, silver in wooden weapons and gold for bladed weapons
  • Heinrich Rood (9), a first kyu, took bronze for bladed weapons
  • Lindy Wolhuter (21), a sixth kyu, won silver for forms
  • Ruan Cilliers (9) won the bronze in wooden weapons.
