Church soccer league kicks off in Randburg

RANDBURG – Churches with goals in mind

Local churches are facing off in 5-a-side soccer matches at the Randburg Action Soccer Arena every Monday.

Kicking the league off at the Randburg Sports Complex on 10 July, the aim of the league is to create a space where members of the churches’ congregations and non-church goers can come together and interact in a social way.

Chase Bernic, co-owner of the arena said, “Having played in a full field church league when I was younger and really enjoying it, I decided it was something I wanted to put into action soccer format.”

He felt this was the perfect time to start this and it would be a good opportunity to recreate and share his childhood experience.

Justin Moneron of Rhema Bible Church clears the ball from his half.

The league is open to all churches and their members as well as non-church organisations and teams. Invitations were sent out to local churches to which six responded to positively. Those involved are Rhema Bible Church playing as Rhemadrid, Rhema South Family Church (En Fuego FC), The Way Church (The Way Warriors), 4Change Church (Global X), Heavenwards International Ministry (Heavenwards FC) and Bryanston Methodist Church (BMC United FC). Chase expects the number to grow in time.

In the first match of the league, Rhemadrid played En Fuego FC. Minor complaints from players were jokingly aimed at the referee and lots of scoring opportunities ensued for both teams. At the end of the 45 minutes, the score was 4–1 to Rhemadrid.

All information regarding entering the league can be attained from the website of Fives Premier League (fivespremierleague.com), the company that runs the arena.
