Bowls SA champs at Honeydew Bowling Club

HONEYDEW – Teams from about 20 districts in the country are competing in a four-day mixed pairs championship.

The bowls South Africa (SA) mixed pairs championship kicked off at the Honeydew Bowling Club on 21 June.

About 20 teams from 20 districts are competing in the four-day tournament, with the final to be played on 24 June followed by the prize-giving and closing ceremony.

Charles Levy, Andrew Strong, Mark Petzer, and Kallie Haupt (president of Bowls SA) attend the opening ceremony.

During the opening ceremony, bowls players from all corners of the country observed a moment of silence to remember players who passed away.

It was followed by raising the district flags, then the Honeydew club handed over the greens to Bowls SA and the tournament was declared open.

The president of Honeydew Bowling Club, John George, said it was a great honour that the tournament was held at their club.

“This means that in our district we have the best ladies and gentlemen combination in our teams.” He said among the players were South Africa’s top bowlers.

One of the organising committee members from the Sables district, Lynne Marnewick, said they were expecting it to be a brilliant week of bowls. “It is a great honour that Bowls SA is hosting the tournament in our district,” she said.

Teams come from far and wide to compete.
