Randburg Tennis Club serves a smashing contest at women’s championships

BLAIRGOWRIE – Ladies duel it out at the Randburg tennis finals.

Randburg Tennis Club saw two women’s players contest its singles championship, and then join forces to win the club’s doubles championships immediately afterwards.

Jessica Portwig and Mieke Van Deventer train at Advantage Tennis Academy, which is based at the club in Blairgowrie, and fought fiercely for the singles title on 4 June.

Although teenagers, the pair are very experienced players. They took part in the Argayon Cup, the UCCLE Trophy and the Royal Leo Cup in August and September last year in Belgium.

Portwig proved to be extremely focused with well-delivered serves while Van Deventer was quite the counter-puncher and returned with powerful backhands from the baseline.

Ultimately the game was won by Portwig 6–3; 6–1.

The doubles game did not disappoint either with Portwig and Van Deventer gathering their energy again to beat Riekie Gordon and Kierryn Richards 7–5; 6–0.

Jessica Portwig returns the ball with a powerful forehand.
