Jhb runners do the ‘poor man’s Two Oceans’ at Randburg Harriers Running Club

PRAEGVILLE – Local runners take on the Easter 100 ahead of the Comrades Marathon.

Many Joburg runners have shown their readiness for the 92nd Comrades Marathon as they tackled a three-day training run, dubbed the Easter 100.

The three sets of training runs were held around the Randburg Harriers Running Club.

Runners reach the finish line on the second day of the Easter 100 training run.

Event organiser, Colleen McNally said,

“Over Easter weekend, there’s the Old Mutual Two Oceans, but not everyone could afford to go there because it’s expensive. So we started this run, calling it the ‘poor man’s Two Oceans’. On Friday, they run 48km, Saturday they run 32km and Sunday they run 20km, which adds up to a 100km in total.”

McNally believes that if a runner is able to finish these sets of runs, he or she is able to tackle the Comrades Marathon.

Runner Mark Davis stretches after his run.

Runners, Mark Davis and Collen Mothabi both agreed that the Easter 100 was good practice for the Comrades.

“It’s more of a training run and it’s in preparation for the Comrades Marathon,” said Davis.

Another runner, Vusumuzi Madonsela said, “If I manage to do this for three days, I know I will have a good Comrades, and if I don’t, I will have a bad one.”

Fellow runner Trust Emmanuel Phakade said he participated in the Easter 100 to try and improve his Comrades time.

“My Comrades aim this year is to finish under seven hours,” Phakade vowed.

The Comrades Marathon will take place on 4 June and runners will stretch their legs from Durban to Pietermaritzburg.
