Title defender considers a full-time golf career

SUNDOWNER – Woo-Ju Son will be defending her title in this year's Curro South African Junior International.

The Curro South African Junior International title-defender Woo-Ju Son is considering a full-time career in professional golfing.

The Curro Aurora learner and Country Club Johannesburg player will be defending her title in the girls’ division in this year’s tournament.

“My dream is to go play in the USA, especially in Florida or North Carolina,” she said. “I’ve played tournaments there when I was younger so I really enjoyed those places. To be the best in the world, I’d have to focus on my short game – that’s the key to a career in golf. Golf is a game of patience, you have to have patience.”

Son will be participating for the sixth time in the tournament taking place at Durbanville Golf Club in Cape Town from 7 to 9 March.

She has already shown the form that carried her to the top of the Women’s Golf South Africa Junior Rankings last year. She made her debut in this tournament at the age of 11 and remains the youngest player to participate in the Global Junior Golf Tour event.

“I picked up my first club when I was about six years old, but I mainly started playing competitively from around seven. My parents inspired me, to begin with, I used to watch them play on the course and then also wanted to play. But it was my coach, Phil Simmons who really inspired me to play more seriously and competitively.”

Aside from winning the Curro South African Junior International title, she has also won the amateur division at the South African Women’s Open.

“I do play in other tournaments such as the Sunshine Ladies Tour and the Sanlam South African Amateur Championship. I also play in a lot of local tournaments in Gauteng, whenever I can.”
