Bowls club supports 1Sport4life initiative

HONEYDEW – Bowls is a mentally stimulating sport where players of different age groups can compete against each other.

Honeydew Bowling Club held its open day on 22 January and endorsed Bowls South Africa’s 1Sport4life initiative, which seeks to develop bowls across all ages and ethnic groups in the country.

During the open day, about 105 residents from 16 to 70 years of age competed against each other.

One of the players, Greg Cabuschagne, who competed for the first time on the club’s greens, said the game was entertaining and stimulating.

“It was very social and this club is great. We enjoyed playing bowls today,” Cabuschagne said.

The club’s competition secretary, Merry-Ann Dummer, said they were committed to developing bowls across all ages.

“This is the most cost-effective and time-efficient sport available,” Dummer said.

She said they were planning to introduce bowls at local schools to strengthen the initiative. She added that this would also be nice for children who did not like aggressive, physical sports.

“Bowling is also wonderful for team-building and we encourage companies to visit us and play the social corporate challenges.”

Dummer said most of the players who participated realised that this sport was physically challenging and mentally stimulating as well.

Players enjoyed the live music by Shaun Q throughout the afternoon and were given free prego rolls.

“We intend holding similar open days in the future and welcome more players.”
