Bowls club host successful Christmas tournament

BOSKRUIN – Proceeds of the tournament were donated to the Randburg Soweto Development Fund.

About 60 bowls players from as far as Zimbabwe, Polokwane, Benoni and the KwaZulu-Natal midlands converged at the Randburg Bowls Club in Boskruin for its Christmas Bowls Tournament.

This fourth annual tournament was played on 24, 26 and 28 December.

The competitive tournament was played amidst a festive atmosphere with about 60 bowlers enjoying the music and festivities while competing with their opponents on the green.

Although it was competitive, the emphasis was not only on the winning but also on the giving. Proceeds of the tournament went towards the Randburg Soweto Development Fund.

The fund is part of an initiative started by the club to re-introduce bowls at Dube Bowls Club in Soweto where aspiring bowlers as young as 11 are showing huge interest in the game. Women’s sanitary products were also collected and were to be donated to Jozi FM’s drive to give dignity to young women.

John Aldridge won the competition and his fellow club member Roberto Gagliardi was runner-up. These players each received R1 000 in prizes from Northwold Spar in addition to others.

Tournament organiser, Lawrence Hillery was pleased that the club was able to host another successful tournament.

“We are very pleased that we were able to host another great tournament, that not only enabled the bowlers to enjoy themselves in a competitive environment, but also show the true meaning of Christmas by giving so generously,” he said.

The club’s president, Laurie Stafford said the tournament was one of many annual activities to attract new bowlers to the challenging sport.

“Randburg Bowls Club is a vibrant, dynamic, yet competitive bowls club that caters for all levels of bowlers. “We offer free coaching and are attracting younger members all the time. We will welcome anybody wanting to join the club,” he said.
