Randburg Football Club enjoys successful year

PRAEGVILLE – As the year winds down, it's time to reflect at the past year's sporting achievements at the Randburg Football Club.

The junior girls and ladies division of the Randburg Football Club can boast after enjoying a successful year in 2016.

The season started on 1 February with a record number of girls and women attending.

The club played in pre-season tournaments such as the fundraiser at Ann Harding Cheshire Homes on 2 May as well as in the Florida Albion Football Club Tournament in April.

Coach Theo Buttress said, “Our first great achievement was when our junior girls beat Emmarentia Girls 2–0 on 9 June and later beat the U13 Fordsburg Boys in the quarter-final of the League Cup to play Florida Albion U13 boys in the semi-finals. However, they could not muster a win to progress to the final.”

The senior ladies division two team played extremely well to finish third in the league behind a star-studded Education Through Soccer (which featured ex-Banyana Banyana player, Portia Modise) and Linhill FC in second.

The division one team held Blue Birds, Setsweke (Old Parks) as well as Sporting FC Ladies to draws throughout the season, but could only end last in a league that had just five teams.

“Our girls did well in the district and against South African Football Association (Safa) Joburg teams where we had at least seven players from our club,” added Theo.

Gretel Buttress captained the Safa Joburg Team to a successive regional U16 tournament win as she did last year. Buttress had the honour and privilege to be the coach selected for this team.

“We also had two women complete their Safa-D Licence in Football Coaching in December,” explained Theo Buttress, referring to Angelique Buttress and Nazeneen Moosa.

The season ended with the club winning the League Cup division two, which was the highlight of the year.

The club starts their pre-season training on 6 February next year.
