Proudly South African speed

JOHANNESBURG – A South African motocross racer has done his country proud.

Sandton businessman and South African motocross racer, Ryan Hunt, placed fifth in the 2016 International World Vets race at the Glen Helen Raceway in California, USA.

The competition saw ex-world champions, all well over 40 years old, going head-to-head in two gruelling heats. This was Hunt’s second big international competition this year, as he recently returned from the United Kingdom where he competed in the International World MXDN Vets event at Fairleigh Castle, finishing in 11th place. He then returned to South Africa to clinch his 12th South African National MX Title.

“The two heats [in California] were some of the toughest racing I have experienced, as none of the riders in the full field gave an inch, they all fought to hold their positions, it really did not seem to be an over 40s Vets race,” Hunt recalled.

“For starters, every rider wanted the holeshot [first one through the first turn] and one had to ride like hell to keep your position. Passing was another problem as no one wanted to give up a position and were riding defensively in both heats.”

When asked about his plans for next year, he said, “Who knows, as there is still some go in the old body and I also still enjoy the sport.”
