Cameron hits a home run

RANDBURG – Cameron Ellis is taking the baseball world by storm.

“Baseball is not an easy game, it is a game of failure and you have to know how to handle that failure. As soon as you think you have got everything figured out, it will humble you in a heartbeat. That’s what I love about the game. It just keeps you coming back for more,” said Ellis.

He added that the selection process for the South African side was a long one. “There was an initial squad selected in April from our annual inter-regional tournament in Cape Town. There were final cuts, and two weeks ago the final squad was announced. I was fortunate enough to have been selected, which is a dream come true for me.”

Ellis is currently doing his apprenticeship as an electrician and studying as a first-year electrical engineering student at Damelin Randburg at night.

Dawie Thomas, academic manager of Damelin Randburg, is excited for Ellis. “For Cameron to have the opportunity to represent our country and compete for the coveted title of World Champions 2016 is a great achievement and we support him all the way,” Thomas said.

Ellis’ team will play against the best countries including Japan, Korea and the USA.

According to World Baseball Softball Confederation president, Riccardo Fraccari, “This tournament will award the most world ranking points on this year’s international calendar, so each game will be exciting and impactful.”

The World Cup runs from 28 October to 6 November.
