Help a swimmer, help charity

HONEYDEW – Resident asks your help to raise money for a number of deserving charities.

A resident who has a love for swimming, and the talent for it, aims to raise R20 000 at the Midmar Mile in February next year.

Kelvin Steyn explained that the Midmar Mile is an annual 25km swimming event at the Midmar Dam and he has competed in it four times before. The first time was in 2010. The swim takes place over two days.

“In order to take part in the event, each participant has to raise a minimum of R20 000 for charity,” said Steyn.

He explained that 60 per cent of the money raised will go to the main charity assigned to him, Duzi uMngeni Conservation Trust (Duct). The conservation trust is a non-profit organisation championing the environmental health of the uMsunduzi and uMngeni rivers. The other 40 per cent owill go to smaller charities which include the SPCA, various children’s homes, the National Guide-Dogs Association, various animal shelters, The Cancer Association and KZN Society for the Blind.

Steyn said that swimming is his sport of choice because it relaxes him. “It makes me happy.” He added that he donates his time to charity because it makes him feel nice to do something for others less fortunate. “I use my talent for good to help others.”

He said that his main goal is to cross the English channel. He added that he is asking people for help, as the main charity he will be swimming for is for the sustainable future of the rivers – which is important for everyone.

“I am able to provide Duct’s tax number on request. The donation could then be used as a tax-deductible expense and contribute to your company’s BEE rating.”

Steyn has opened a dedicated bank account for this purpose. Please contact him for the bank details.
