Swinging iron for their bread

RANDPARK – Being a professional golfer is not all about doing what you love and earning millions.

RANDPARK – Being a professional golfer has its perks and drawbacks – one week can yield returns of R1 million or more and bring fame and a sense of joy and fulfillment.

Yet, sometimes, months can go by without a single pay cheque, which could lead to depression and feelings of self-doubt.Randpark Golf Club’s Anthony Michael (31) and Ryan Tipping (35) are no strangers to these experiences, as both have been Sunshine Tour members for years, earning their keep solely on the quality of their swings. Both men were introduced to the game as toddlers by their fathers, who spent weekends with them on golf courses and driving ranges, nurturing their talent and love for the game.

The two became wholly devoted to the sport. “I love golf. I can’t see myself doing anything but being outside and playing golf,” said Tipping, who has played in 40 European Tour events in 15 countries in Europe, Asia and Africa.

“The best part is you can be your own boss and you get to see the world and meet lots of people.”

For Michael, the mental challenges of golf make it exciting.

He earned R1.3 million in a week when he came third at the Tshwane Open in February and is currently ranked eighth in the country’s order of merit, yet it did not always go well for him. “From 2011 to 2013 I did not play well; it put a lot of pressure on me to play well to earn a living and you play better without that pressure. I would not like anyone to feel that pressure,” he said.

Michael hopes to one day win a Professional Golfers Association (PGA) tour and then he’ll retire once he has earned enough money to live comfortably.

Tipping said although he loves golf, all the travelling he does is difficult on his family, so when he becomes too tired of travelling or sustains an injury, he will retire and stop to drink cocktails on the beach.

Until then, both players will carry on doing what they love.
