PRAEGVILLE – Randburg Cricket Club hosts fundraiser to smashing success.
It was non-stop cricket action at the Randburg Cricket Club as batsmen struck six after six, and bowlers took wicket after wicket at the club’s fourth annual Double Wicket Tournament.
The event is held as a fundraiser at the start of each cricket season, and its format is designed for maximum thrill. Two and four over games were held on 24 September, with 10 teams of two competing to see which pair could score the most runs in such a short space of time.
Each wicket lost meant five runs were deducted from the pair’s score. One pair would bat while another would bowl to them, and when the overs were up, they would change over. The rest of the players acted as fielders. The pair with the most runs scored proceeded to the next round. Teams that lost in the early stages of the tournament played again for a semi-final spot.
At the end of the day, great cricket was played, watched by families and friends from the bar where great meals were enjoyed and raffles and fun prizes were handed out. “It has been lekker fun, the best part was that everyone came together and had a good time,” said Wesley Nemeti, who joked that he and his double wicket partner, Jarred Turner, had played very poorly on the day.
“We try to instil a family atmosphere at the club and you can see that that has been great today, although Wesley and I could have done better,” Turner added.
A total of R6 000 was raised from the event, although the main aim of the day, according to club captain Ryan Jacobs, was for everyone to enjoy some cricket and introduce new players at the start of the season. “It has been a great success and we will definitely do it again next year,” he said.
The winners of the tournament were Leighton Friend and Rohan Stavrou.
