GALLERY: Harriers run for miles
MALANSHOF – Randburg Harriers host successful street-mile race.
Runners from all over the country flocked to the Randburg Harriers for the club’s first ever KPMG Randburg Street-mile, which was a roaring success.
The Malanshof-based club hosted riveting street-mile (1.6km) races for different age and gender categories, a 10km race, a 5km fun run and a 50m nappy dash, to the enjoyment of the fit and almost-fit alike on 4 September.
“The course was nice, flat and fast – I really enjoyed it,” said road running sensation Lebo Phalula, who won the street-mile open women’s category in 00:05:14 ahead of her twin sister, Lebogang, who came second. The result was even more impressive when one considers that Lebo came second in the 10km Spar Women’s Race in Centurion the day before.
The fastest time of the day was run by open male winner, Jerry Motsau, in 00:04:22, who, although was quite out of breath at the end, said it was “quite a good race”.
Dog lovers also had a field day at the doggy-mile race, which most took at a leisurely stroll so that their four-legged companions could make other furry friends along the way.
“It is nice to get outdoors and meet other dogs on a walk like this,” said Phyllis Teubes, who came with her husband, two daughters and two dogs. Alastair Billing and Rosalye de Villiers agreed that the day was special, having together walked their beagles Kabous and Aviemore through each of the three main races.
After all of this, toddlers raced with glee, squealing with joy all the way to the finish line at the nappy dash.
The Harriers are already planning their next Street-mile day. “Without a doubt we will do it again next year. The day went very well, we had a great field for the 10km and good racing in the street-mile. It was very competitive,” said Harriers public relations officer John Neale.
