Rio Olympics at Summerfields Nursery School

OLIVEDALE–Summerfields Nursery School host their own Rio Olympics where learners participated.

The Olympic fever inspired Summerfields Nursery School to host its own mini Olympics . Learners were given the opportunity to experience how it would feel to be an athlete at the Rio Olympics.

The nursery school was transformed into a sporting field with different stations and took place on 19 August. Summerfield Nursery School principal, Louise van Gool, said this is the first time they hosted an event of this nature and learners participated in various sporting activities.

“Some of the sports they participated in are running races, high jump, long jump and gymnastics. The learners absolutely loved all the activities and got the opportunity to be awarded on the podium just like at the actual Olympics. They were so proud and went home excited,” said van Gool.

She added that the learners each made their own torch out of colourful tissue paper; all three medals were made of gold, silver and gold shiny paper, which was connected with a ribbon to put around their necks. “We have a big playground and always encourage learners to be active and participate in sports activities,” described van Gool.

On 27 August the nursery school will host a fun walk around the Olivedale area where learners, family, friends and past learners will participate. There will be food and drinks sold after the walk.

“All proceeds will go towards providing water tanks to be installed at our school. We thought it would be a good idea to have them because we’ve never owned one and since we’re going through a drought, they will help towards the general upkeep of the school,” concluded van Gool.
