Taekwondo champ seeks assistance

NORTHWORLD – Help Sonya Rebelo to reach her dream of retaining her taekwondo ITF World Championship belt for a third time.

Two-time taekwondo world champion Sonya Rebelo seeks assistance to go overseas and defend her title for a second time.

Sonya Rebelo is set on attaining her dream of defending her title at the Junior and Veteran ITF World Championships in Italy come September. “I have worked really hard to get to this point and it’s taken time, dedication commitment and a lot of sacrifices to reach this stage of the competition and I am asking for support to make my dreams come true,” she said.

Rebelo has received part sponsorship from Spar Northworld however, she explained that she needed more sponsors as the total cost for her trip is R26 000.

She pointed out that most big companies she has approached only sponsored the big sports such as rugby, soccer and cricket but that this left many other athletes out in the cold.

Rebelo urged everyone to get behind her as she is not only going for herself but to represent her country which she did proudly.

“I know that I will come back with my third world champion title, I just need some support from my fellow countrymen,” she aid.

Spar manager, George Neophytou said that they had decided to chip in for Rebelo’s trip as she always came into their store and was a loyal customer. “Sonya is a champion and we support her dream to defend her title in Italy,” he said.
