OLIVEDALE – Club championships are held at the Olivedale Tennis Club after chairperson's murder.

The Olivedale Tennis Club successfully concluded its club championships recently, despite it being interrupted by the murder of the then club chairperson, Louisa Lubbe.

The championships were put on hold just one week in after Lubbe was shot and killed at her home in Sonneglans on 26 May. A memorial service was held on the court for her, and afterwards club members had to find a way to keep playing. “It has been a difficult time but everyone managed to get together and we had a great championship. Everyone had fun,” said the new chairperson, Tavernt Muchenje.

The tournament went on a little longer than expected, but players were able to share their grief and help each other through the difficult time. Furthermore, the junior championships were held for the first time in the club’s 21-year history, something Lubbe had pushed for a long time.

“We are so proud of how the young players performed,” said the club’s head coach, Philip Lawson, who won the men’s singles event, and men’s doubles event with doubles partner Andreas Scott. “It was part of Louisa’s goals – to see the youngsters excel here.”

Esther Martyne was close friends with Lubbe, and was her doubles partner before she died. Martyne won the women’s singles event and the mixed doubles event with partner Gordon Simmonds. She said Lubbe contributed to the club immensely with her passion and dedication, but there are many capable people at the club who will carry it forward.

The Louisa Lubbe Memorial Trophy was awarded to the junior champion, Rhys Meyer (12). “The tournament was not too difficult and I had fun,” he said. He added that his determination, passion, and strong forehand helped. Gail van den Berg and Glen Duncan won the women’s doubles event.

Muchenje concluded that the club is moving forward. “We have started our social matches again, and soon we will have a junior league. Anyone is welcome to come.”
