Rand Park welcomes school from England

RANDPARK RIDGE – English and South African school rugby players unite for the love of the game.

Exeter College from Devon, England and Rand Park High School challenged each other in the spirit of sport.

Exeter College visited Rand Park to play against their 1st teams in netball, hockey and rugby.

It has become an annual tradition at Rand Park to invite international schools to experience South Africa’s style of sports. On every occasion, the pupils share far more than a game of rugby, netball or hockey but also make everlasting friendships.

Rand Park’s rugby 1st team played Exeter in an exhilarating game on the day. Rand Park had a strong attacking side even after a three-week break from training. Exeter pupils showed great spirit and constantly supported their players. However, Rand Park won the game 15–5.

Exeter’s head rugby coach, Guy Wilson, said, “It was a competitive game, yet it was played very fair.”

Sean Johnson, Rand Park’s 1st team coach commented, “It was a tough game for our players after such a long break but we learned a lot from the Exeter players and we both had a great game of rugby.”

The netball teams from both schools also shared in a great game on the day.

The game was fast-paced with different styles from both sides evident.

The final score saw another win for the home team with the score 18–11.

The girls’ hockey game was hosted at the Randburg hockey fields. This was the highlight of the three games because it was watched by both the rugby and netball teams. Exeter got their only win, with the score 3–0 against.

A traditional South African braai capped off Exeter’s visit to Rand Park. “We welcomed Rand Park High’s hospitality and spirit,” added Wilson.
