Local athletes selected for Paralympics

JOBURG – The 2016 Rio Paralympic athletes have been announced by Sascoc and here are a few local athletes who will be participating.

Local athletes have been selected to compete in the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in September.

The SA Paralympic team is used to bringing back home hordes of medals and its 45 athletes are ranked among the best in the world. Already, some of Joburg’s athletes are accomplished Paralympians.

North Riding resident, Graham Paull from the Dabulamanzi Canoe Club at Emmarentia Dam is one of the athletes who joins Team SA, as announced by the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee. It was during the finals at the ICF Paracanoeing World Championships, held in Germany in March, that Paull managed to qualify after finishing in seventh place.

Another Paralympian going to Rio, is wheelchair tennis quad star, Lucas Sithole, who already bagged a medal at the 2012 London Paralympics. He will be joined by co-stars Evans Maripa and Kgothatso ‘KG’ Montjane. All three players live in Westdene and have Paralympic experience. Only Leon Els joins the wheelchair tennis quad team as a newcomer.
