96 bowl for the win

BOSKRUIN – Randburg Bowls Club hosts the fourth annual Life Members Memorial Tournament to dedicated bowlers.

Randburg Bowls Club hosted another bowls tournament at their Boskruin clubhouse on 23 to 24 April. The fourth annual Life Members Memorial Tournament was held in honour of all Randburg honorary life members.

The tournament boasted the cream of Gauteng’s bowling talent including multiple Commonwealth gold medalists, World Bowls Championship medalists, and no fewer than nine bowlers who have represented South Africa on the world bowls stage. There were also a number of provincial bowlers.

Club president Ray Turner said that the star-studded field of 96 bowlers, proved that bowls is certainly not ‘old man’s marbles’. “The ages of the participants ranged from 16 to people in their 70s,” said Turner. He went on to add that the quality of the field, the skills exhibited and the camaraderie among players of all ages, proved that bowls is a cradle-to-grave sport that definitely closes the generation gap.

The competition over the two days of bowls was fiercely competitive, yet was played in a friendly spirit. The teams from all over Gauteng were playing for cash prizes of R25 000, with R14 000 going to the winning team. In addition, every bowler received prizes from local restaurants and suppliers.

After the five games of bowls, that spanned two days, the first prize of R14 000 went to South African International Bowlers team. The second prize of R5 000 went to the Randburg Bowls Club team. In third place was a team from Belgravia Bowls Club.

Bobby Donnelly from the winning team said that they were very thrilled to have won with so many skilled bowlers on the field. “The competition, was fierce but thoroughly enjoyable, the organisation of the tournament was excellent,” said Donnelly.
