Gauteng water polo teams head for Durban

PARKTOWN – The Gauteng A and B water polo teams looked ready for the upcoming Water Polo Currie Cup in Durban, at a practice recently.

The Gauteng water polo teams are on their way to the Water Polo Currie Cup which takes place in Durban from 21 to 24 April.

The Currie Cup is over 116 years old and is still fiercely contested and this year promises to be no different. The teams include Central Gauteng A and B teams, KwaZulu-Natal A and B, Border, Eastern Province A and B, Western Province and Northern Gauteng. The Currie Cup tournament will serve as trials for the selection of the U18 boys’ and girls’ teams to compete in the second FINA Youth World Water Polo Championships in August in Podgorica Montenegro.

Central Gauteng A team coach, Dave Hansen is also a water polo coach at Jeppe High School for Boys. He said that he was selected by Central Gauteng Schools Water Polo to coach the team. “The boys had three sets of trials in the beginning of February and were selected for the Gauteng teams. I am stoked to get this opportunity to coach the team,” said Hansen.

Hansen explained that water polo does not have such a great impact on your body as other sports like rugby does. “A 60-year-old player can play against a 20-year-old. The water is a great equalizer,” said Hansen. He added that even though the boys are from different schools, they are all great friends.

He said that the average age of the A team is 18 years and the B team is a much younger team. “Both teams have set a very high goal for themselves. They aim to have an all-Gauteng final. If you don’t aim high then you cannot achieve anything,” concluded Hansen.

All the players of the A and B teams from Central Gauteng looked ready for the Currie Cup as they versed each other in a practice game on 12 April at the Roedean School in Parktown.

The A and B teams comprised of boys from St Stithians College in Lyme Park, St John’s College in Houghton, Jeppe High School for Boys, Parktown Boys’ High School, King Edward VII School in Houghton, St David’s Marist Inanda and St Peter’s College in Sandton.
