Old Parks Sports Club women’s football team hosts a fundraising tournament

BORDEAUX – Old Parks Sports Club raises funds for disadvantaged young women who are passionate about soccer.

Old Parks Sports Club women’s football team hosted a fundraising tournament between the men and women’s indoor football and the women’s fast five netball teams.

The aim of the tournament, which took place on 5 March was to raise funds for the talented young women who play in the Old Parks Sports Club women’s football team and come from disadvantaged communities. They require support for their transport, food, kit and other costs to participate in football and to have access to Old Parks Sports Club’s facilities.

The tournament was hosted in partnership with the Africa United Sports Arena. The Africa United team and Team 2.0 competed in the soccer finals with Africa United winning 1–0 and took the grand prize of R2000.

In the women’s indoor football tournament, the Hogan Lovells took top honours by beating the Ninja-One-Ninja-All football club. The Super Saiyens won the netball tournament after beating top contenders Back to Black in the finals.

The players from disadvantaged backgrounds are offered opportunities such as mentoring programmes, assistance with school and university fees and social activities and development, which aims to empower young women connected through sport.

“The women’s football team at Old Parks Sports Club have successfully raised funds for the past few years to support these young women,” said Old Parks women’s convener, Melanie Murcott. She concluded that the team has won the Development Soccer League in which it has competed several years in a row, but needs help from the community in order to continue to grow and thrive.
