During the Inter-District High School Athletics Championship on 21 February at the Ruimsig Athletics Stadium, Waleed represented his school in the 100m and 200m. He won gold in both events to qualify for the Provincial Championships.

Waleed started competing in 2014 at the age of 13 when he was still at the Deutsche Internationale Schule Johannesburg (DSJ).

“It all started at DSJ where I was a pupil. They used to organise competitions with other German schools, so my teacher decided to put me down for 100 metres and I broke the record. That was the beginning of my journey in athletics,” explained Waleed.

His father explained, “I saw his potential and registered him to Athletics Gauteng North (AGN) in Pretoria.”

In February 2015 Waleed was invited to participate in the school inter-district U15 athletics. He also

represented Gauteng North in the South African Club Championships in

Sasolburg.

The 15-year-old is also a keen soccer player and played soccer for his school in Germany and Switzerland in 2015.

“I have 34 gold, silver and bronze medals for athletics and soccer,” said a proud Waleed.
