Only the fittest survive

STRIJDOM PARK – Crossfit masters break sweat at the competition.

The Masters Crossfit competition took place at the CrossFit Iron Gate gym in Strijdom Park on 20 February. Gym co-owner Dave Ayres said that this competition was to expose the masters to competition as they previously seldom got the opportunity. He explained that such events build community spirit among the Crossfit boxers and keep the interest in the sport going. “Crossfit is a fun way to keep in shape and such events keep the members spirits up and motivates them to keep going,” Ayres said. The competition, Ayres said, was for members of 40 years and older and usually comprised of doing sets of different movements and actions such as pull-ups, war balls, running, and teams of two partners worked together.

He noted that Crossfit was a new sport that started in the United States 16 years ago. Ayres said that he came across it while studying for his qualifications in sports science. Veronica Chittenden said that she has been doing it for over a year now and the difference the sport had made in her life was evident.

“My eldest son introduced me to the sport and ever since I have never looked back. I am a long distance runner and through Crossfit I have been able to improve my endurance and I am more supple and have more energy than before,” Chittenden said.

Sonya Rebelo said that she came in for the trial sessions and just fell in love, “All aspects of my body are better, I am leaner and more toned.”
