Clash of the athletics Titans

FONTAINEBLEAU – Top provincial primary school athletes compete in one-of-a-kind athletics meeting.

Laerskool Fontainebleau  hosted a one-of-a-kind event – a Primary Schools Top 20 Athletics Meeting at Ruimsig Stadium on 30 January.

Appel van der Westhuizen initiated the athletics meeting to create an opportunity for pupils to receive more exposure and compete at a high level before the provincial athletics championships.

Twenty-three schools from Gauteng, North-West and Limpopo competed in the event. Each school sent 20 of their best athletes. Between these 23 schools, 196 athletes had competed in their respective provincial championship, 67 athletes competed at the National primary schools Athletics Championships and 31 athletes won medals at the National Championships.

The following winners were announced:

  •  Best short-distance athlete: Simoné de Wet (Laerskool Fontainebleau)
  •  Best long-distance athlete: Kimberley Swanepoel (Laerskool Louw Geldenhuys)
  •  Best hurdles athlete: Simoné de Wet (Laerskool Fontainebleau)
  •  Best jumps-athlete: Kayla la Grange (Laerskool Fontainebleau)
  •  Best throws-athlete: Zonica Lindeque (Laerskool Fontainebleau)
  •  Best field-athlete: Kayla la Grange (Laerskool Fontainebleau)
  •  Best track-athlete: Simoné de Wet (Laerskool Fontainebleau)

The winning school was determined by calculating the Top 20 event results per school and working out an average. Laerskool Fontainebleau won with 899 points.

“It was an honour for Laerskool Fontainebleau to host the first Primary Schools Top 20 Athletics event. We look forward to making it even better in 2017. We trust that this event will become a highlight on the yearly primary schools athletics calendar,” said Laerskool Fontainebleau principal, Arno Faber.
