Cricket season is well underway

MALANSHOF – Randburg Cricket Clubs takes a closer look at the current season.

As summer moves along with the cricket season in full swing, Randburg Sun takes a moment to catch up with the Randburg Cricket Club – a Premier League Cricket Club with senior and junior cricket structures. The club was founded over 50 years ago in 1959 and has grown to be a formidable force in the Gauteng leagues.

Jonathan Houston, vice chairperson of the Randburg Cricket Club, said that so far the club has been experiencing a season of mixed results with a number of teams doing exceptionally well and with others struggling to hit their stride. “The club’s Saturday first side –who plays in the Gauteng Cricket Board’s Saturday One League – is having a particularly strong season and is currently in second place right behind Jeppe Cricket Club. The remaining three Saturday sides are all sitting mid-table in the various leagues but are applying themselves well to ensure the back half of the season sees a lot more victories, pushing them up the league tables,” he noted.

Houston pointed out that within the Sunday league structures the club’s Premier League team has also been experiencing a mixed season, but is fighting back hard in the second half of the season and putting in a lot of work to claw their way back above halfway in the table. “As the Sunday competition shifts to time cricket, all four of the Randburg Sunday senior cricket sides are digging deep and committing to long hours in the nets to guarantee strong finishing positions in the leagues,” he said.

Houston explained that the Randburg Cricket Club is always on the lookout for young, talented and enthusiastic cricketers who are looking to enjoy a game of cricket – either socially in the lower leagues or competitively in the upper echelons of the GCB league structures.
