The Golden Lions Rugby Union Club Senior Grand Challenge finals saw four rugby giants battling for the coveted trophy. The stands were packed with supporters from all sides willing their team to get the conversion.

The first game of the evening was Circa Diggers U20 versus Harlequins U20. This was by far the closest game as the final result was Harlequins U20 winning with 22 – 10. The third teams played each other with Circa Diggers scoring 7 – 20 to Germiston Simmers.

The second team match was extremely heated and well fought. Final results saw Circa Diggers second bringing home their first trophy with 15 – 10 to Khosa second.

Circa Diggers Club captain Marc Baker said, “A big thanks goes out to our sponsors Circa Staffing Solutions as well as a special mention to senior coaches, Derek Page and Lodewyk Riekert.” He also thanked Dave Moore and Christa Swanevelder.

The first teams from Circa Diggers and Harlequins took to the field for the much anticipated game of the night. It was a tight game from the beginning with a strong defensive side from Harlequins. At one point two flood lights failed resulting in a few choice words from fierce competitors. In no time the lights were fixed and game play continued.

The final score saw Circa Diggers successfully get the trophy with a brilliant win of 44 – 5.

Baker added, “We have done well tonight. We were able to win two of the finals comfortably and competed well in the other two.” He ended with, “Next year we’re looking to step it up a gear and take on the larger clubs and play in a more professional league.”
