Flag flies for the Boks

FOURWAYS – Springbok supporters around the country contribute to a farewell message for the team.

A flag was raised for the Springboks at Montecasino on 4 September. The flag is a country-wide show of support for the Springboks in the upcoming Rugby World Cup. The initiative forms part of the Tsogo Sun Fly the Flag campaign.

Rolls of ribbon were distributed all over the country to Tsogo Sun venues. Visitors were asked to write their messages for the Springboks on the long rolls. The flag that was raised at Montecasino is made up of a multitude of these messages.

The flag consists of hundreds of messages from fans.

The flag overlooks Witkoppen Road to be observed by the passing public, however, a smaller version will be presented to captain Jean de Villiers and coach Heyneke Meyer at the Springbok send-off on 11 September.

Tsogo Sun group sales director, Neil Fraser, said, “The response from Springbok supporters throughout South Africa has been overwhelming and truly heartwarming. We were delighted to give so many people the chance to share their personal messages of support and encouragement.”

Montecasino staff work to erect the flag.

Although only some of the messages were depicted on the flag, 10 920 metre rolls were filled, adding up to a total of 2.1 kilometres of messages. There was an average of 38 signatures and messages per metre of ribbon. An estimated 82 840 supporters participated.

The Springboks will play their first match against Japan in the Rugby World Cup on 19 September.
