NORTH RIDING – Runners take to the streets at Northgate Shopping Centre for the 19th annual Road Race.

About 2 000 runners participated in the 19th annual Northgate Road Race on 28 June at the Northgate Shopping Centre.

Despite the very cold weather, athletes and road runners registered for the run at 6am. The race consisted of a 5km and 10km run. A wide range of runners took part in the event with ages from eight to 80-years-old. The start gun was fired at 7.30am at Entrance 4 for all the runners to start the race.

“We have had a great turnout this year, the weather has cooperated with us and the sun has come out to keep all the runners happy,” said Northgate’s marketing manager Natalie Berkhout.

The Roodepoort Athletics club organised the event with Northgate Shopping Centre. There were a whole host of winners from the race. The categories for male and female were: open, veteran, master, grandmaster, great grandmaster and junior. The runners were kept safe with JMPD clearing the roads as well as race marshals officiating throughout the course.

Northgate Shopping Centre’s general manager Gene Uys said, “What is great about this race is that R5 from each entry fee will be donated to our local charities – either Mother of Peace or the Lighthouse Baby Shelter.” The first 1 900 runners of the 10km race received medals with the first 400 of the 5km getting the same.
