NORTH RIDING – Meet ‘The Moose’ ground-and-pound legend.

Colin ‘The Moose’ Hume is punching down his competition in the Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) world.

North Riding resident Hume (29) started his martial arts career in high school when he took kung fu. This clearly sparked a desire to develop his skills in the much-disciplined world of martial arts. Being involved in both kung fu and boxing, Hume went on to train MMA at the Tapout Academy. It was here where he was encouraged to have his first amateur fight. This, as many would say, marked the beginning of the end and the start of an incredibly successful and ever-growing light heavy-weight career.

Being a single father to his five-year-old daughter and having a full time job for Londoloza Protection Group, he trains at minimum twice a day.

‘The Moose’ as he is commonly referred to, won his weight in gold by gaining his Cape Town Fighting League (CFL) title belt and is sponsored by Mettle Wear. Still the current champion, he will be grading for his purple belt on 30 May. “I really enjoy the escape, it keeps me busy and helps destress me. I know this sound odd but it takes intense discipline. This is what I truly love about martial arts,” said Hume.

He trains at Tapout Academy in Northcliff and Lion Heart Gym in Honeydew where, under the guidance of Gert Strydom and Wiekus Swart, has managed to grow as a fighter. “These men have helped me so much in my fighting career, I constantly develop more skill and tighten my grappling and boxing style every day.” He will be defending his CFL title in November. When asked why he continues his gruelling career he said, “I want to do this for my daughter.”
