The Lions do it for charity

HONEYDEW — Progression Sports with the Lions Rugby Union swing against women and child abuse.

Players from the Lions Rugby Union leaped out of their comfort zones with a round of golf on 27 May at Jackal Creek Golf Estate.

The golf day in partnership with Progression Sports was to raise funds for People Opposing Woman Abuse (POWA).

Director of Progression Sports and former Lions player Dustin Hoffman said they wanted to create awareness and raise funds toward a big problem in society.

“The Varsity Cup supports POWA and it was something that we wanted to get involved in. It also goes to show that just because we are aggressive and rough on the field that does not transcend outside the sports field.”

Hoffman said that the team played golf because the two sporting codes are on opposite sides of the bar. “Rugby is very rough and golf is more calm. They represent women and men,” he continued .“So rugby would represent us men and golf represents women and together we are all fighting one cause.”

Twelve players from the club took part in the golf games and Midrand-based radio station, Mix FM carried out a live broadcast from the course in support of the campaign and where corporates bid two four-balls on the golf day. All proceeds went directly to POWA.
