Championships for physically disabled

JOHANNESBURG – Disabled compete for medals across city.

The Nedbank National Championships for Physically Disabled are currently being held in venues around Johannesburg, including the Randburg Sports Complex and University of Johannesburg Athletics Stadium. Seven sports codes, including athletics, boccia, cycling, football, goalball, judo, powerlifting and swimming will be played until 2 April.

Former Olympic and Paralympic Swimmer Natalie du Toit spoke at the annual event’s launch on 26 March. “These championships started my career as an athlete with a disability,” said Du Toit, who retired in 2012 with 13 Paralympic gold medals. “It was an eye-opener for me and I realised how important it was as a building block toward international participation.”

Isaac Shadung, president of the South Africa Sport for Physically Disabled (SASAPD), praised the headline sponsors for their continued support of the annual championships. “The Nedbank National Championships is so important to this organisation because it provides a springboard for international participation,” he said.
