Resident to bowl in Namibia

RANDPARK RIDGE – Allan Gordon says SA should not be too confident ahead of playing against Namibia.

Randpark Ridge resident Allan Gordon (68) will play bowls for South Africa in Namibia next week. He joins the five-player SA Seniors (60 years and above) men’s team in an annual dual between the nations in Windhoek between 31 October and 2 November. He explains that although South Africa is ranked third in the world at bowls, and Namibia is not even in the top 10, his team “shouldn’t be too confident.”

“We will be playing in Namibia and the different conditions can affect the game,” he says. “I am not too sure what the greens will be like there but we are all confident that we will do well.” Gordon coaches bowls at the Randburg Bowls Club, and manages junior bowls in the Johannesburg District. Last year Gordon played for the SA Seniors men’s team that beat Namibia. There are two changes to that team.

“We at Randburg are very proud of him both on and off the field,” says Randburg Bowls Club President Laurie Stafford. “[Gordon] is not one to blow his trumpet but he is putting a lot in for the juniors in Johannesburg. We wish him the best and wish we could join him.” The SA Open men’s and women’s teams will also travel to Namibia at the same time to play in a quadrangular tournament against Namibia, Zimbabwe and the SA Juniors.
