Taekwondo grading starts at a young age

KJD Martial Arts Academy hosts the championships for taekwondo at the Randburg Hockey Club.

The Randburg Hockey Club hosted the taekwondo grading for three clubs of Randburg, Alberton and Vanderbijlpark on 18 October.

The grading for the Olympic sport taekwondo included the judging of the fighters’ patterns – ‘poomsae’ – which range from chan-ji, dan-gun, won-hyo and choong-moo.

These are fighting styles that are used in a four-way fight, the stances are upright, fast and short.

Students then went on to grade their fighting styles in full combat formation.

Grades range from green belt to black belt.

Fighters were judged on a rating of one to 10 and medals were awarded to those who scored above seven points.

KJD Martial Arts Academy based in Randburg took more medals and they also assisted in the judging for the Eagles Alberton and Eagles Vanderbijlpark.

The fight grading started with the young children, juniors and seniors.

The day was filled with competitive spirit as well as a well-earned respect for an ancient fighting tradition.
