RANDPARK RIDGE - Rand Park High School's A league champions wipe the Pirates Schools Rugby Challenge clean.

Rand Park High School took part in the Pirates Schools Rugby Challenge at Pirates Rugby Club on 13 June and proudly took home the trophy.

According to Rand Park High’s spokesperson Heather Robinson, this is an annual event and the participating teams were Rand Park High, Northcliff High, Heronbridge High, Maragon High and Fourways High schools.

“We competed for the Pirates School Challenge honours and Rand Park High won three of the four sections of the tournament,” said Robinson.

“The First 15s team, were our U16 and U14 who are the A league champions in their respective age categories. Final scores: U14 beat Fourways High by 17–12; U16 beat Northcliff High by 22– 5 and our First 15’s Team beat Northcliff with a final score of 20 –18,” added Robinson.

According to Farone Eckstein, deputy principal for sport, the rugby teams at the school start preparing prior to the season, and the school has a dedicated team of pupils who give one hundred percent.

There is extensive training in the school’s gym, and established rugby clinics that are run by external rugby specialists and the investment made by the coaches benefited the teams.

Eckstein said the school sponsored training workshops for the coaches and will be sending the three coaches to Stellenbosch this July for more rugby coach training.

“Rand Park High has established a culture of excellence in rugby which has led to high expectations of our coaches and players. Our teams and dedicated coaches have stepped up to meet our expectations,” concluded Eckstein.
