Randburg Squash Club’s champ, Lee Klette

BLAIRGOWRIE – The female Randburg Squash Club champion is in the same league as men.

Lee Klette (50) demonstrates that the skill difference between men and women in sport can be squashed.

Female club champion of the Randburg Squash Club, Klette plays in the masters (35–70 age group) 2nd league, a league primarily played by men, but one in which women can play too, if they are good enough.

“I do feel I can compete with men,” she confidently told Randburg Sun.

“Especially, when the ball bounces more in winter.”

According to her, the men she has played with are “gentlemen”.

“They play you like a man, so they are competitive, but they do not run into you.”

Klette has played squash for 25 years, but she has not lost any of her enjoyment for the game.

“I like squash because it is an all-weather game. I also play tennis, but you cannot play it in rain. Squash is also more sociable.”

She added that squash gives her a “great workout” and although it can hurt your back, the sport keeps a player supple.

Klette also plays for the Gauteng Masters team, which is a mixed-gender team.
