Bikers challenge for family treat

Delta Park School to host mountain bike race

Another eventful endurance challenge, the Delta Dash Endurance Challenge mountain bike race, is set to take place on 12 April at Delta Park School in Blairgowrie, Randburg. Sue Greaves, a member of the Delta Dash Organising Committee, said the six hour event is in its fifth year and caters for the whole family.

She added that the area is a safe, green haven for mountain bikers and the Delta Park offers 13 hectares of grassland and woodland to explore, while the school sports grounds provide a perfect viewing point to follow the racing. Last year’s biker challenge was eventful and gave resounding results and this year they expect an exciting race according to Greaves.

“The 2013 saw Parks Cycling club beating Diepsloot MTB Academy by just under 2.3 minutes in the senior men’s team category (22 laps), while in the senior men’s solo category Jarrad Van Zuydan completed the race in 20 laps, one lap ahead of Darrel Fitzell. Linda Petersen won the Senior dames race,” explained Greaves.

People are welcomed to enjoy this exciting race where entertainment and food stalls will be provided and they can also join the fun walk before the bike race.

“Ahead of the bike race is the Delta Dash Fun Run/Walk at 7am ending at 8am. Entries for the fun walk/run take place on the day at the Delta Park School Sports Grounds,” Greaves said. “The Endurance Challenge will start at 9am finish at 3pm with prize-giving afterwards. First place in all categories which include the solo category and a three-man team category will get cash prize”. Greaves added that all the proceeds will be used by this public school for learners who have learning barriers.

“Delta Park School is a public school from Grade 1 to Grade 12 for learners who experience barriers to learning. All proceeds from this annual event will be used by the school for additional therapies, equipment, interactive white boards, computers and for assisting learners with sporting activities,” she concluded.
