Separation at source: It really is easy to do

BLAIRGOWRIE – A Blairgowrie resident argues that separating waste at the source should be made law.

Rob Filer from Blairgowrie writes:

I was intrigued with the article published in the Randburg Sun, week ending 11 August, titled Any ideas to solve landfill crisis?

I have been separating my waste at home for at least the last three to four years. It is really not a major problem for anyone who is able to think about the problem for a moment. What are we going to do in a few years when there is literally no more space in which to dump our waste, some of which will take many hundreds of years or more to break down?

All it takes to sort it out is to do it now, this week. Get four or five separate small bins (depending on the size of the family) and start putting your plastic type waste in one, tin (steel) and aluminium waste in another, off-cuts from preparing food such as skins and other vegetable waste can go in a garden compost heap (and if you are in a flat, just add it to the bin for dump waste that will actually go into the wheelie bin for collection).

Most weeks, my wife and I frequently do not put out anything in the wheelie bin, except large garden off-cuts such as tree branches. Other weeks there will be a small bag of chicken or other meat bones, which compost heaps do not like.

It really is easy to do. In my opinion, this should be made law as I understand it is the case in overseas countries.

Please keep chasing this subject. Well done.
