EXPERT ADVICE: What’s so great about plain old parsley?

JOBURG – A new way to try parsley – and that is in tea.

Claire Brown writes:

Parsley is one of the herbs that have gotten the “boring” rap – it’s mostly known as a garnish for foods and is then tossed aside while one enjoys their meal. Poor parsley – it really can be used more creatively and can be enjoyed as an actual food.

Who knew that parsley actually is one of the most important herbs for providing vitamins and minerals to the body and acts as nature’s immune-enhancing vitamin and mineral? A great quality of parsley is that it qualifies as a “chemo protective” food. This means that it can help neutralize particular types of carcinogens, such as cigarette smoke. Parsley is rich in vitamin C and vitamin A. It is also rich in folic acid, one of the most important of the B vitamins which has great benefits to cardiovascular health.

These are just a few great benefits of this little herb.

A great thing to try is: parsley tea

A cup of parsley tea.
A cup of parsley tea.

Drinking parsley tea is an especially good habit for those individuals who either have been diagnosed with or wish to be proactive and prevent diseases. Folic acid is also an important nutrient that assures proper cell division. It is important for cancer-prevention in two areas of the body that contain rapidly dividing cells in the colon and the cervical area.

Drinking parsley tea helps to regulate the regular process of women’s monthly periods and used for women after delivery to promote uterine contractions. Parsley is effective for all kidney and urinary conditions by helping to prevent salt from being reabsorbed into the body tissues therefore forcing debris out of the kidneys, liver and bladder. It also helps improve edema and general water retention, fatigue and scanty or painful urination.

How to make your tea:

Put a 1/4 cup of fresh parsley in a cup or in a teapot and pour 1 cup of filtered boiling water over it.

Allow to steep for 5 to 7 minutes.

Remove the parsley leaves and then enjoy your tea.

You may want to sweeten with honey and a fresh bit of lemon juice to enhance the flavor.

So get the best out of your parsley!
