To the great ones

There are many great teachers who have made a positive difference in the lives of so many pupils.

Amid reports of racism, incidences of bullying and a lack of responsible supervision, schools and teachers have been in the spotlight again. However, despite the negative reports, there are many great teachers who ensure that the profession remains an honourable one. They are a select group – you find them at every school, and they always do more than what is required to ensure that their pupils get the best of them.
You would find them in the staffroom now and then, albeit seldom, banded together, in deep discussion – not to bemoan overcrowded classrooms, or unrealistic time-frames within which to complete syllabuses, or even the apathetic attitudes of some pupils and parents. No. You would find them discussing strategies to complete the syllabus while ensuring all aspects are effectively taught, or to reteach basics that pupils have forgotten, and even go as far as to organise a daily lunch for needy pupils.
They don’t ever consider lowering standards to enable more pupils to pass. They make certain that standards are maintained and work to the point of exhaustion to get pupils to meet these academic standards.
Over the years I have taught at schools in KZN and Gauteng, and I have had the privilege of working with these special human beings. The numbers on their pay cheque is certainly not what motivates them. To them teaching is more than a job, it is a calling! Their biggest reward is when their pupils go on to do their best and achieve.
As it is soon school holidays, I wish these dedicated educationists a wonderful break. Rest and rejuvenate in time for the next term. You are an unquestionable necessity and you are appreciated!
