Sharonlea Primary School learners tell us why trees are important

Trees planted today will benefit people for years to come as trees do not die unless they are chopped down.

Sharonlea Primary School planted six trees for Arbor Day and the Grade 6 learners who were involved had a lot of fun doing so.

This was aided by the fact that the children knew much about trees, and how they would benefit the school and even future generations.

When natural sciences teacher Alex Frost ā€“ and this publication ā€“ asked them to discuss these benefits in further detail, this is what they had to say:

Thendo Rameetse: Trees give us furniture and food for both humans and animals. They also give us paper for education.
Thabisile Lafuleni: Trees give us oxygen through photosynthesis and they provide shade.
Prestley Mpekana: Trees give us oxygen and help the world by reducing carbon dioxide levels. They also give us fruits and vegetables.
Reolan Moodley: Trees help by taking carbo dioxide and giving us oxygen so that we can breathe. They also give us food in fruits and vegetables.
Ande Ncube: Trees are the oldest organisms on earth. Once you plant them they never go away unless you cut them down. They give us a cleaner ecosystem and give us medicines like camphor, asprin and aloes.
