Orchestra’s picnic concert to showcase the best in classical music
The picnic concert will include works by Nikolai, Handel, Vivaldi (with De Bruyn as guitar soloist), Offenbach, Strauss, Verdi, Grieg, Faure and Elgar. These include the Overture to the Merry Wives of Windsor, and the well-loved Pomp and Circumstance March.
The chairperson of the Rand Symphony Orchestra believes the variety of music at this year’s Picnic Concert will ensure there is something for everyone.
Speaking to Randburg Sun ahead of the event on September 3, Johan Kohler said community members should take advantage of the classical music showcase by some of the city’s best musicians in the genre, taking place in their proverbial backyard, Blairgowrie.
“With spring in the air, the Picnic Concert is the perfect opportunity for people to get out, enjoy some fresh air and listen to some great music played by Randburg’s very own symphony orchestra,” he said.
“We showcase a variety of music ranging from Viennese waltzes to British marches, and from French ‘chill-out’ to lively Italian overtures.”
This year André de Bruyn will perform as a soloist on classical guitar.
The programme will consist of well-known works by Nikolai, Handel, Vivaldi (with De Bruyn as guitar soloist), Offenbach, Strauss, Verdi, Grieg, Faure and Elgar. These include the Overture to the Merry Wives of Windsor, and the well-loved Pomp and Circumstance March.

The concert will take place from 15:30 at Domus Dei NG Kerk, 30 Jean Road, Blairgowrie.
