Larger of 2 Robindale sinkholes to be repaired

JRA says the stormwater pipe has been damaged and will also need to be repaired before the road can be reinstated.

The Johannesburg Roads Agency said it had investigated one of two sinkholes in Robindale and a plan was in the pipeline for fixing it.

The larger of the two sinkholes is at the intersection of George Street and Marion and Kent avenues, while the other is on the corner of Gondola Avenue and Abbott Road.

Ward 99 councillor Nicole van Dyk and resident Gavin Mack approached the Randburg Sun after reporting the sinkholes to Johannesburg Roads Agency repeatedly since June 8 without reply.

In a previous article about apparent sinkholes emerging in Robindale, Van Dyk and Mack complained of the risks posed to motorists and pedestrians on these corners, especially about the larger sinkhole as it was on a busy intersection where three roads met.

Agency spokesperson Bertha Peters-Scheepers said on August 14 that the agency had inspected the larger sinkhole and found that the road had been damaged.

“The JRA depot inspected the sinkhole and the source was a leaking Joburg Water pipe that has been repaired. The JRA will be reinstating the section of the road shortly,” she said.

“In addition, the team has indicated that as the stormwater pipe has been damaged, this will also need to be repaired before the road can be reinstated, so this will, unfortunately, delay road repairs.”

Peters-Scheepers said the sinkhole on Gondola Avenue and Abbott Road would also be investigated.
